Uses
Imitrex is used to treat migraine headache attacks once they occur. It is not effective in preventing migraines. Imitrex is not to be used for other types of headaches.
How To Use
One dose is taken by mouth at the first signs of a migraine attack. If you must take a second dose, do so exactly as instructed by your doctor. Do not take more than 200mg in a 24 hour period. Tablets are to be swallowed whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew them.
Side Effects

Precautions

There have been rare reports of those with sulfa drug allergies having allergic reactions to sumatriptan. Consult your doctor or pharmacist. Drug Interactions
Sumatriptan is metabolized mainly by the liver and dosages may need to be reduced in patients with liver dysfunction. Imitrex can cause elevation of blood pressure and spasm of the coronary arteries of the heart. Imitrex should be avoided by patients with coronary artery disease (patients with angina pectoris and a history of heart attacks), and by patients with poorly controlled high blood pressure. It is administered with caution to patients with risk factors for coronary artery disease ( high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated blood cholesterol, obesity, cigarette smoking, and strong family history of heart attacks). In some patients, the first dose of sumatriptan can be given in the physician's office to monitor any adverse heart events.
Imitrex should not be administered along with ergot type migraine medications, or with MAO inhibitors. Sumatriptan and ergotamine together can cause prolonged spasm of the blood vessels. Therefore, the use of these two medications should be separated by at least 24 hours. Safe use in children has not been established. Rarely, seizures after sumatriptan administration have been reported in patients with epilepsy.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include tremor, chest pain, slowed breathing, and seizures.
Notes
Imitrex is used to relieve a migraine attack in progress. It is not effective in preventing migraine attacks.
Missed Dose
Take Imitrex only when a migraine attack occurs as directed. This is not taken routinely. Never "double-up" the dose.
